Musings from the Mizzenmast

In the previous issue, I made mention of the ongoing effort to establish a new Maritime Research Center at the Friend Memorial Library in Brooklin, Maine. This resource will be named in honor of Anne and Maynard Bray, both of whom played essential roles in the wooden boat revival that began to gather serious momentum in the 1970s. The Center will house the 7000-volume library of nautical books and periodicals assembled over many years by Jon Wilson, founder and longtime editor of WoodenBoat. In addition, renowned marine photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz is in the process of donating his entire pictorial archive, consisting of more than 250,000 photographs of classic vessels. It is hoped that in the future, the Center will attract further and comparable collections of significant documents and images. Well over 50% of the overall campaign goal has been raised to this point. Should you wish to contribute, please feel free to be in direct touch with Mr. Robert Baird of Brooklin, who is chairing the capital drive: robert@rabassoc.com.
